An at-home instrumentation study relating arm angle and jump force to basketball shot distance.

Objective. In 2.671, students spend the semester exploring measurement methods and experimental techniques common to mechanical engineers, then write a formal research paper on a topic of their choice โ€” capped by a poster session with students and faculty.

Solution. Taking the course during COVID, I scoped the project to what I had at home. Combining basketball and engineering, I explored the relationship between arm angle, jump force, and shot distance. Arm angle was measured with a Vernier goniometer, and two force plates under the player's feet captured jumping force.

I found a positive linear correlation between arm angular velocity and distance from the basket, and jumping force generally increased with distance. Missed shots were distinguishable only through changes in angular velocity. Further investigation is needed on lateral arm-angle changes, player shot mechanics, and shot distances beyond six meters.
