A whale-shaped underwater ROV with a biomimetic, undulating swimming motion.
In the fall of 2018, in 6.a01 FISHBOTS, I designed and constructed an underwater whale-shaped remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Waterproof servos provided thrust and mimicked the undulating swimming motion commonly seen in whales and dolphins.
The body was built from U-channel, with foam added for buoyancy so the vehicle could float and surface when needed. The lateral fins steered the vehicle underwater, while the rear fin provided thrust.
